UNCG WordPress Assets

Provided below are the University branded WordPress assets including the official UNCG WordPress theme, a child theme which you can use to add custom CSS, and a Navigation Plugin/Widget that allows you to add navigation to a widget area. Downloads and installation instructions are included on each tab.

UNCG WordPress Theme

The UNCG WordPress theme may be downloaded using the link below. It provides a few options to customize the look of your UNCG WordPress site. This theme is dependent on the University Website Assets. If you're not deploying this theme on one of the web environments managed by ITS, you will also need these files.

Installation

  1. Download the theme.
  2. From your WordPress Dashboard, click on "Appearance".
  3. Click the "Install Themes" tab at the top of the screen.
  4. Click the "Upload" link.
  5. Click on the "Browse" button and select the file you downloaded in step 1.
  6. Click the "Install Now" button.
  7. After installation completes, click on the "Activate" link. Your site is now using the UNCG WordPress theme.

Home Page Options

By accessing the "Theme Options" from your WordPress Dashboard, you may choose from 5 different layout options for your home page. The "Default" option has the typical WordPress look and feel while the other options mirror the University Website Templates.

  • The "Default" option has the typical two-column WordPress layout with the blog roll on the left with a right sidebar.
  • The "Left Nav" option is a two-column layout with a left sidebar and the blog roll on the right.
  • The "Page Sidebar" option is a two-column layout with the blog roll on the left and a sidebar on the right.
  • The "Three Column" option has left and right sidebars with the blog roll in the middle.
  • The "One Column" option has the blog roll only, with no sidebars.

Page Templates

The same layouts offered for the home page are also available for your WordPress pages. The template used for each page is chosen via the "Template" drop-down located in the "Page Attributes" box.

UNCG WordPress Child Theme

This child theme allows you to customize your the UNCG WordPress theme independent of the primary theme. By downloading the UNCG WordPress theme, the UNCG WordPress Child Theme and activating the Child theme in WordPress, any changes made to the child theme will not be overwritten when the main theme is updated.

Once this child theme is installed and activated, your custom CSS can be added by choosing the "Editor" option under the "Appearance" menu from the WordPress Dashboard. Most other changes you need can be accomplished in a similar fashion. For more information please refer to WordPress Codex: Child Themes.

Installation

Installation of the child theme is the same as the main theme. Download the child theme and follow the instructions listed for the main theme but choose the child theme after you click the "Browse" button.

Navigation Plugin/Widget

This plugin/widget allows you to move your navigation from the Gold Bar across the top of the page into a widget area. Once installed, you can sort your navigation by Page title, Page order, or Page id. You may also, exclude Pages that you do not want as part of your navigation.

Installation

  1. Download the plugin
  2. From your WordPress Dashboard, click on "Plugins".
  3. Click "Add New".
  4. Click the "Upload" link.
  5. Click on the "Browse" button and select the file you downloaded in step 1.
  6. Click the "Install Now" button.
  7. After installation completes, click on the "Activate Plugin" link.
  8. From your WordPress Dashboard, click on "Appearance" and then "Widgets".
  9. Drag the "Page Navigation" widget into the widget area in which you want it displayed.
  10. Set the widget configuration values to your desired preferences and click the "Save" button.
  11. You can remove the Gold Bar navigation by removing the "unit-horizontal" div from header.php
